FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I meet you in Milford?

Yes, of course you can.  The trips costs $189 for divers/ $134 for non-divers, ex Te Anau, or $159 for divers and $99 for non-divers ex Milford Sound. It is worth remembering that it is a long day (12 hours or so) and you may not feel like driving yourself after diving; we have some stops with walks and an interpretation of the area during the homeward journey.

diverWhat temperature will the water be?

One of the major contributing factors to Fiordland's unique marine life is the narrow temperature range of its salt water, approximately 12-16OC throughout the year.  The surface fresh water layer may be a degree or two cooler but we don't hang around up there!  We can't guarantee that you won't get cold, but will fill you up with snacks and hot drinks between dives and will even fill your wetsuit with warm water if you wish - just a wee trick of the trade!

How much of the fiord will we see?

Milford SoundWeather permitting, we try to show you as much of this stunning place as possible - all the way out to the Tasman Sea and into every nook and cranny on the way.  We are usually on the water for around 3 hours or more, so there is plenty of time to soak it all in, take photos or simply relax.

What kind of boat do you have?

"Kiri-Waipai" is a purpose-built, aluminium, pontoon-style boat that has been made locally in southern New Zealand for the conditions we encounter in the fiords. It is an excellent dive boat built with your comfort and safety in mind, for example, easy exit and entry points and protection from some of our more 'unsettled' weather.
The Kiri-Waipai is self contained with its own cooking facilities, showers, and toilet on board.

Do I need to be an experienced diver?

No.  Although you must be able to show us proof that you have completed a recognised diver training course, great experience is not required. In fact, many of the divers we take into Milford Sound have not dived since finishing their course, or may only have done a couple of dives since qualifying.

All dives are guided by an experienced Dive Master or Instructor and, when appropriate, sites are chosen with first-time fiord divers in mind.

What safety systems do you have?

First-aid and oxygen kits are carried on each trip, together with a VHF, 2-way radio.  All staff are first-aid trained and a staff member who is a qualified oxygen provider is always present.

Every dive is guided by a dive professional, to ensure profiles are within safe limits (especially as a drive to altitude is involved on leaving Milford).

Tawaki Adventures operate in a safe ship management scheme which means that all maritime laws are adhered to.  We are also SSI members, which means that we have met the membership standards for quality, safety and service excellence.

Do you have rental equipment?

Yes, there is no need for you to bring any dive gear with you, we have it all:- good quality 2-piece, 7mm wetsuits, with gloves, hoods and boots to keep you cosy warm!

BCD's and regulators have been chosen for their reliable and safe operation.  Torches are provided free of charge (including batteries) and disposable underwater cameras are available for purchase on the boat.

Along with mask, fins, tanks, and weight belts, we have all the gear you will need for a safe and comfortable day down in Milford Sound.

Can I catch fish or crayfish?

Tawaki Adventures has a non-extractive policy whilst on the fiord and that way we leave everything for the next group to see.  Some of 'our' fish even have names and distinct personalities!!
